Ever wondered how cars really work?
Motor vehicle courses take place in the colleges professional onsite facilities, at the Barry College Colcot Road Campus. The college has one full motor vehicle workshop. It is equipped with two full size four-post vehicle ramps. Access to the workshop is through two full size roller shutter doors that open to the front of the building with full vehicle access.
Our courses give students the opportunity to gain skills and qualifications, which will further their opportunities of gaining employment in the automotive industry.
Who will the course suit?
This course is for pupils who are interested in a career or further study linked to the automotive industry. The course will enable pupils to gain qualifications and skills which will prepare them for broad career options in the automotive industry. It is intended that the course will appeal equally to both sexes and will bridge some of the gender imbalances traditionally associated with each of these areas of study.

What are the entry requirements?
All students who apply for the course will go through an informal interviewing process with course tutors, in order to assess suitability. Successful interview is an entry requirement for the course.
In the interview the tutor will see whether you have the potential to progress on the course. It is also a chance for you to find out more about the course.
Entry is at discretion of both the course tutor, and recommendations from school staff.
How long is the course?
The course is run on a part-time basis over 2 years, starting in September. Although this is a two year course, acceptance onto year two is dependant on successful completion of year one and students individual progress and abilities.
When will I be in College?
Learners will be in college for one or two half days per week. Transport will be provided to and from school.
How much study is involved?
You will be taught in College for approximately 3 or 6 hours every week, and some additional home study and practice may be required.
What will I study?
The course is mainly workshop based.
Students will learn all the basics of vehicle maintenance and servicing, through hands on experience. There will be some theory work involved.
How will I be taught?
You will learn mostly through practical activity with demonstrations, lectures, and group discussions. Independent and team activities take place to develop skills and to encourage learners to develop their learning style.
How will I be assessed?
Pupils will be assessed by practical work and assignments.
What opportunities will the course provide me with?
• The skills that pupils will develop are relevant to all progression routes and occupational areas within the field of engineering. This qualification helps develop an important part of the practical content of many full time courses at Barry College post 16 including Engineering First Diploma and National Certificate and Plumbing courses.
• Pupils may continue with motor vehicle studies at Coleg Glan Hafren.
How much will it cost?
All learning pathways courses are fully funded, incurring no cost to the individual student, although there may be small additional costs for uniform and equipment.
Learners may have the opportunity through school to apply for financial help, in order to cover the cost of any necessary equipment. To find out more, please speak to a school co-ordinator.
