Barry College is a leading training provider for the hair and beauty industry in South Wales.
All courses are taught in our new, state of the art beauty and holistic therapy salon – `Academi @ Barry College’. It is recognised as one of the best facilities in the country – with L’Oreal and Goldwell also using it for their own training courses.
Who will the course suit?
This course is designed for people wishing to gain an insight into entry into the profession, or a sound stepping stone to further studies within the hairdressing and beauty therapy industry.
What are the entry requirements?
All students who apply for the course will go through an informal interviewing process with course tutors, in order to assess suitability. Successful interview is an entry requirement for the course.
In the interview the tutor will see whether you have the potential to progress on the course. It is also a chance for you to find out more about the course.
Due to the nature of the industry and students should come prepared with some questions to ask the member of staff interviewing them. Careers Wales could help prepare them for the interview.
Entry is at discretion of both the course tutor, and recommendations of suitability from school staff.
To do this C&G course you should have:
• A keen interest in hairdressing and beauty therapy industry
• An interest in your own appearance
• A professional manner
• A good attendance rate
How long is the course?
The course is run on a part-time basis over 2 years, starting in September. Although this is a two year course acceptance onto year two is dependant on successful completion of year 1 and end of year skills test.
When will I be in College?
Learners will be in college for two half day sessions per week, for three hour periods. Transport will be provided to and from school.
How much study is involved?
You will be taught in College for approximately 6 hours every week, and some additional home study and practice may be required.
What will I study?
You will study a range of modules on the course including:
hairdressing and beauty therapy, health and safety, customer service, reception, personal presentation, Industry and occupation awareness.
How will I be taught?
You will learn through a range of lectures, demonstrations, seminars, interaction, group discussion and a variation of learning strategies used in order to provide motivation and stimulation. You will practice practical skills on other learners.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment is carried out through assignment work, examinations, practical assessment within the salon environment and homework.
What opportunities will the course provide me with?
This course provides a progression route onto full time NVQ level 2 Hairdressing and Beauty courses, and Beauty Therapy and Holistic Therapy Diplomas. Apprenticeships are also available in this area, providing the opportunity to earn whilst you work (based on successful progression and acceptance onto the course).
Acceptance onto a course on completion of the learning pathways programme is dependant on successful completion of their learning pathways course, attendance and behaviour; it is not an automatic process.
How much will it cost?
All learning pathways courses are fully funded, incurring no cost to the individual student, although there may be small additional costs for uniform and equipment.
Learners may have the opportunity through school to apply for financial help, in order to cover the cost of any necessary equipment. To find out more, please speak to a school co-ordinator.
