Fancy gaining some hands on experience of the construction trades?

Barry College construction courses are recognised as some of the best in the country.

This course gives students the opportunity to gain hands on experience and enjoy practical work in a construction workshop environment, where they can develop a variety of hand skills.

The skills that pupils will develop are relevant to further courses of study and employment as a trainee or apprentice carpenter, bricklayer or painter/ decorator. The course will enable pupils to develop skills in each of the three trade areas and choose the route they prefer later in their education.


‘Saturday Club’ – for pupils in years 9, 10 and 11
Our Construction department run popular Saturday clubs for
school pupils in Years 9, 10 and 11 who want to find out more
about learning and working in construction.  These hands on
programmes are free of charge and a great way of
finding out if you would like to do a course in brickwork,
carpentry or painting and decorating.

Who will the course suit?
This course is for pupils who enjoy theoretical as well as practical work in a construction environment where they can develop their knowledge and skills.
This course has GCSE equivalences at grades D to G.

What are the entry requirements?
All students who apply for the course will go through an informal interviewing process with course tutors, in order to assess suitability.  Successful interview is an entry requirement for the course.
In the interview the tutor will see whether you have the potential to progress on the course. It is also a chance for you to find out more about the course.
Entry is at discretion of the course tutor.

To do this C&G course you should have:
• An aptitude for theoretical study and a good standard of written work.

How long is the course?
The course is run on a part-time basis over 2 years, starting in September.  Although this is a two year course acceptance onto year two is dependant on successful completion of NVQ Level 1 in year 1 and end of year skills test.

When will I be in College?
Learners will be in college for one half day session per week.  Transport will be provided to and from school.

How much study is involved?
You will be taught in College for approximately 3 hours every week, and some additional home study and practice may be required.

What will I study?
The course is both classroom and workshop based

How will I be taught?
You will learn through a range of lectures, demonstrations, seminars, interaction, group discussion and a variation of learning strategies used in order to provide motivation and stimulation. 

How will I be assessed?
Pupils will be assessed by practical work and assignments one of which is externally assessed.

What opportunities will the course provide me with?
The skills that pupils will develop are relevant to further courses of study and employment in the construction industry in a variety of craft, apprentice or technical pathways. The course is particularly suited to those pupils who will be studying a range of academic subjects at school and aspire to technical roles in the construction industry such as quantity surveying, civil engineering or construction site supervision. 

How much will it cost?
All learning pathways courses are fully funded, incurring no cost to the individual student, although there may be small additional costs for uniform and equipment.
 
Learners may have the opportunity through school to apply for financial help, in order to cover the cost of any necessary equipment. To find out more, please speak to a school co-ordinator.
