Barry College has a large, exciting art and design department. You may want to get a qualification in art and build up a portfolio to progress onto a higher-level course or university. You may simply want to try something new, or develop an interest in art and have fun. Whatever your aim, if you fancy getting creative then Barry College art and design department have the answer.

Art Student

Who will the course suit?
This course offers pupils the opportunity to access art / design courses in the new art and design / media centre at the main college. The choice of qualification is dependant upon the level of prior attainment of the group of learners and the interest in this option.

What are the entry requirements?
All students who apply for the course will go through an informal interviewing process with course tutors, in order to assess suitability.  Successful interview is an entry requirement for the course.
In the interview the tutor will see whether you have the potential to progress on the course. It is also a chance for you to find out more about the course.
Entry is at discretion of both the course tutor, and recommendations of suitability from school staff.


To do this C&G course you should have:
Examples of artwork, plus an enthusiasm for all areas of art, craft and design.


How long is the course?
The course is run on a part-time basis over 2 years, starting in September.  Although this is a two year course, acceptance onto year two is dependant on successful completion of all year one studies.


When will I be in College?
Learners will be in college for one half day per week.  Transport will be provided to and from school.


How much study is involved?
You will be taught in College for approximately 3 hours every week, and some additional home study and practice may be required.


What will I study?
OCN qualifications in different art/design areas e.g. Painting and Drawing, Ceramics, 3D studies.


How will I be taught?
You will learn through a range of lectures, demonstrations, seminars, interaction, group discussion and a variation of learning strategies used in order to provide motivation and stimulation. 

How will I be assessed?
Assessment will be continuous throughout the course; you will be required to demonstrate your skills and knowledge both practically and theoretically.

What opportunities will the course provide me with?
This course provides a progression route onto the many full time courses available at the college, in a variety of art vocations.
How much will it cost?
All learning pathways courses are fully funded, incurring no cost to the individual student, although there may be small additional costs for uniform and equipment.
 
Learners may have the opportunity through school to apply for financial help, in order to cover the cost of any necessary equipment. To find out more, please speak to a school co-ordinator.
