BTEC National Certificate in Operations & Maintenance Engineering with Design – Full-time
(Examination Board – BTEC, City & Guilds)

Who will the course suit?
This course is ideal for learners who want to pursue a career in engineering, but are unsure in what field.  It offers experience in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronic and Design areas and develops a broad knowledge of Engineering Technology.

What are the entry requirements?
This is a LEVEL 3 Course.

Every college course is given a level 1(lowest) – 5 (highest). This level helps you know what the entry requirements are and if it will be suitable for you. For part-time courses it also indicates the amount of study involved – for example an introductory course would be a lower level if there is not much extra study involved.

To do any Level 3 course you should have:

However, adults do not always need these qualifications, just enough skills to deal with the course.

Please note that sometimes, even if a learner has the entry requirements for a Level 3 course they will start on a Level 2 course. This happens in practical subjects. This is because learners will need to develop practical skills to a certain level before they can attempt a Level 3 course in these areas.

For all full-time courses and some part-time courses you will be invited to have an informal interview with the tutor. On all courses that interview, a successful interview is also an entry requirement for the course.

In the interview the tutor will see whether you have the potential to progress on the course. It is also a chance for you to find out more about the course.

How long is the course?
This course is full-time and is run for 4 days a week over 1 academic year, starting in September.

When will I be in College?
4 days per week, 9.00am – 4.00pm.

How much study is involved?
You will be taught in College for approximately 22 hours in college every week plus some additional study is required.

What will I study?
You will study a range of modules and qualifications, including:
· BTEC National Operations Maintenance Engineering
· City & Guilds 2D Design using AutoCAD Level 3
· EMTA Awards Limited (EAL) NVQ in Performing Engineering operations
Electrical workshop skills at level 2
· Key Skills – ICT at Level 2

How will I taught?
The course has workshop practical sessions and science laboratory and classroom based sessions for aspects of essential theory.  Design is based in the AutoCAD Studio.  You will also develop Numeracy, Literacy and IT Skills.

Work experience is arranged to suit your preferences, wherever possible, with a local company for a 2 week period.

How will I be assessed?
The course is continuously assessed by a learner log book or portfolio and practical jobs made in the workshops.

What opportunities with the course provide me with?
This course incorporates the ‘Industry Standard’ City & Guilds Design using AutoCAD qualification.  Skills developed in this part of the programme are highly sought after by many industries.  Engineering can be many things, but the main reasons why most engineers enter the profession are that it is creative, challenging and of practical use.  This course introduces and develops the skills necessary for this, and provides a firm foundation for a future in engineering.  The course team strive to make your time at College an enjoyable experience.  Successful learners may continue their studies to higher education or you may enter jobs in electrical, mechanical and CAD sectors or engineering at anytime during the course.  The course team encourage you to apply for jobs whilst you are at College and contact with Careers Wales is made early on.
