BSc (Hons) Aircraft Maintenance Engineering – Full-time
(Awarded by University of Glamorgan)

Who will the course suit?
The course will suit people who are interested in gaining a Degree in Aerospace.  The University of Glamorgan and Barry College International Centre for Aerospace Training (ICAT) jointly offer this innovative EASA PART-66 (JAR-66) B1 licence-based honours degree programme.  It leads to an EASA PART-66 Aircraft Engineer Licence, as well as a BSc (Hons) Aircraft Maintenance Engineering.  The basic licence qualifies holders to be selected for further aircraft type authorisation prior to being permitted to sign off aircraft for flight.

The course is based over the ICAT and University of Glamorgan campuses. This gives access to both real aircraft experience and University life and facilities.  Skills and knowledge developed on the course will be enhanced by industrial placements, which are a key part of the learning experience, and further developed by working with the latest technology and systems.

What are the entry requirements?
UCAS tariff: Overall points 220-260 from a minimum of two A-level passes or equivalent, preferably for Maths and/or numerate subject.
GCSE: Five at grade C or above, including Mathematics and English language

How long is the course?
Full time for 3 years.

The course will be based on formal lectures, e-leaning, practical laboratory and workshop training on real airframes, engines and aircraft systems as well as industrial placement periods.

How will I be assessed?
Assessment will cover the EASA PART-66 aircraft engineer basic licence and the BSc (Hons) Aircraft Maintenance Engineering requirements.

What opportunities will the course provide me with?
Aerospace is a dynamic, fast moving and technologically advanced industry; it is big business and part of our daily lives.  This course offers excellent career opportunities worldwide as the EASA PART-66 basic licence is a legal requirement for engineers prior to being selected for type training, which then gives authorisation to sign off aircraft for flight maintenance or repairs.

As well as developing a broad range of sound transferable skills the course offers rewarding career opportunities in the aerospace industry along both technical and management routes.

How much will it cost?
Home and EU Students - £3290 per year
International Students - £9500 per year

Home and EU students beginning the course in September 2010, are able to apply for a student loan to cover the whole of the tuition fee charged by the college. The tuition fee loan does not have to be paid back while you are studying and you only start repaying this loan once you have finished your course and are earning more than £15,000 a year.

If you are planning on enrolling onto a full-time HE Undergraduate programme, contact your Local Education Authority (LEA) and they will send you an application form (PN1) to establish your eligibility for student financial support.  After providing your family’s income, the LEA will then work out how much support you are entitled to, and you can also indicate how much student loan and how much fee loan you would like to take out.
