Help with course costs We aim to keep the costs of your course as low as possible for you.
All our full-time courses are FREE, whatever your age or the course. All you pay is a small enrolment fee to the College. All part time courses have a cost. However, in this course guide and on the website all part-time courses with this sign (£) are FREE for you if: • You are a full time student at Barry College or any other school, college or university, OR • You are under 19 years of age and not on a government funded scheme, OR • You are in receipt of a means tested benefit (JSA, Income Support, Pension Credit, Incapacity Benefit or Working Tax Credit) If this is the case all you will pay is a small enrolment fee to the College. Help with money Sometimes you may need help to pay for a course, or other costs incurred by coming to College such as bus fares, books or childcare. If this is the case, there are a range of grants and funds you can apply for. Look at the information below and see what you could apply for.
Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) How much? £30, £20 or £10 per week Who gets it? 16, 17 and 18 year olds on full-time or part-time courses over 12 hours. Your annual household income must be under £30,810 approx per year. Assembly Learning Grant (ALG) How much? Up to £1,500 per year Who gets it? Those 19 years of age or over on full-time or part-time courses (totalling 275 hours minimum per year). Your annual household income must also be under £16,830 approx.
Barry College Financial Contingency Fund (FCF) How much? This College fund can help towards the cost of books, course equipment, essential visits, examination fees, childcare and the cost of travel. Who gets it? Full-time or part-time learners can apply. This fund is means-tested and depends on your financial hardship and personal circumstances. ILA Wales How much? Up to £200 towards the cost of the course, registration or exam fees, books an CD Roms Who gets it? Those 18 years old or over wanting to do a part-time course. You can apply for the ILA if: You have no qualifications higher than Level 2 (i.e. GCSE/ NVQ 2). OR You claim a means-tested benefit Dependent on your financial circumstances you will receive £100 or £200 towards your course fees. Please note: it does not cover full-time courses, courses your employer has asked you to do, HE qualifications or certain part-time courses. See www.ilawales.com for more information.
React How much? Up to £2,500 towards the cost of training courses. Who gets it? People who have recently been made redundant. This grant is to encourage you back into work. Contact your local Careers Wales office for a training assessment and application form.
