Want to become a qualified brickwork profesional?

Barry College construction courses are recognised as some of the best in the country. Brickwork courses are taught at two of our sites, Barry College Colcot Road in Barry and Barry College Cardiff Construction Training Centre (CCTC) in Cardiff Bay. The site you study at depends on where you live and what course you wish to take.

There are two ways to train for a career in brickwork.

The first way is to find a job in brickwork and come to College whilst working and gain NVQ qualifications. If you choose this route you will either come to College one day a week, or apply for a unique CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) apprenticeship.

Alternatively, if you are not employed in the industry you can study a full-time course at College. On a full-time course you can gain a qualification in under 2 years that gives you the skills to progress into work as a brickwork tradesperson. Once in work, you can then gain the vital industry experience to convert your qualification into a NVQ – the requirement to become a fully qualified and registered brickwork tradesperson.

We also offer popular introduction courses in brickwork. These are useful if you are considering a career in brickwork and want to learn more about it or if you want to learn these skills for your own enjoyment or DIY.

Construction Saturday Clubs
We run popular Saturday Clubs for school pupils in Years 9,10 and 11 who want to find out more about learning and working in construction. These hands-on programmes are FREE OF CHARGE and a great way of finding out if you would like to do a course in brickwork, carpentry or painting and decorating after your GCSEs.

Where can it take me?
There is a need for skilled and qualified brickwork professionals. In South Wales large scale building projects such as St David’s 2 Shopping Centre, the International Sports Village and the Defence Training Academy require hundreds of local brickwork professionals over the next decade.

Most construction students secure a job in their chosen trade by the end of their course, with over 50% gaining apprenticeship employment during their course.

Paula Campbell, 39, Cardiff
“As a single mum of 3, it has been a tough road getting back into studying. However, I have really enjoyed the challenge and had a lot of support from the College. Once I qualify I hope to set up my own business doing small scale private work for women and older people”.

Vincent Tejedo, 19, Cardiff
“I left school and started a CITB apprenticeship. It was a great way to learn and gain my qualifications as I started working for a big construction company, starting earning money but also got to come to College for 3 days per week in the first year, then 1 day per week for the next 2 years. I studied at both Barry and Cardiff sites and had a great experience – the tutors were really good. I am now fully qualified and working full-time”.
