Foundation skills - supported entry level programmes

Foundation Skills courses are supported entry level programmes. There are two main programmes – ‘Vocational Access’ and ‘Pathways’.

Vocational Access
The Vocational Access programme is a highly supported entry level course. It aims to help individuals, primarily between 16-19 years of age make the transition into College, training and possibly employment.

On Vocational Access all learners undertake core subjects of English, Maths and IT and receive support with independent living and job skills. Learners then choose their programme of study with their Course Tutor. Learners can choose from subjects including:
• Brickwork
• Business
• Carpentry
• Conservation
• Cookery
• Leisure and Tourism
• Office Technology
• Painting and Decorating
• Retail

The course also offers other activities for learners, including day tasters in other work based areas such as hairdressing, beauty, childcare, art and ceramics. There are also outdoor activities, walks and learners can take Duke of Edinburgh awards.

Learners are well supported throughout their time at College, with pastoral and tutorial support. The course aims to boost confidence, self esteem and encourage learners to reach their potential and progress in the most suitable way for them.

Vocational Access is a full time course.  The cost of the course is FREE + £10 registration.  The course is 1 - 2 years and starts in September.

Pathways
The Pathways programme offers individuals opportunities to develop to their maximum potential – both for life and work.

A main focus of ‘Pathways’ is to build an individual’s confidence and self esteem, alongside continuing to develop essential skills of number, reading, writing and IT. All learners undertake independent living skills and there are opportunities for work skills training during the programme. Pathways offers a wide range of learning experiences in a variety of settings and the opportunity to achieve accreditation in subjects including pottery, woodwork, cookery, floristry and horticulture.

Students receive pastoral and tutorial support throughout their time in College. ‘Pathways’ staff also work closely with the learner’s parents and guardians, as well as Social Services and other support agencies. All learners are supported in their transition out of the College through links with support agencies such as Vision 21 as well as Social Services to ensure individuals become part of the wider community.

The Pathways course is FREE + £10 registration.  The course is 2 years although this can vary depending on the student.  The course is full-time, although there are opportunities to study part-time.

Where can it take me?
Vocational Access staff work closely with Careers Wales and their specialist advisors to find all learners the best possible progression route. In recent years these have included Level 1 vocational courses in the College in subjects including Brickwork, Carpentry, Leisure and Tourism, Hairdressing and Art.

Some learners who take the Pathways programme progress onto employment, usually to supported work with agencies including Vision 21 and Innovate.
Other learners take up opportunities to continue their education and training with specialist providers, or move to Social Services sheltered provision.
