The sign language qualifications taught at the College are recognised across the country, in education and industry. British Sign Language (BSL) is a minority language and used increasingly by people in work and life. At College, learners are taught by deaf tutors or tutors who work with people who are deaf. These popular sign language courses fill up quickly so it is a good idea to apply early. Where will it take me? After completing sign language courses some people go on to gain employment as Communication Support Workers, dealing specifically with deaf people. Most use their new skills to enhance their working life and job prospects, others simply want to communicate with friends. Bart Balch, 28, Cardiff British Sign Language (BSL) Level 3 “I only started sitting exams in BSL three years ago even though I have been using it all my life, but I needed to have the qualifications in order to help others with their studies. I enjoy studying as it really helps to boost my confidence. It doesn’t matter that I am deaf - if anything I think maybe I can inspire other deaf learners to come into education.”
