Would you like a career in one of the uniformed services?
The Public Services courses prepare you for entry into all the uniformed public services. The challenging courses equip successful learners with the necessary qualities to pass the selection processes. You can gain careers with the Police, Fire, Prison and Ambulance Services, the Army, RAF, Royal Navy, Customs and Excise and the Probation Services. The essential qualities of physical fitness, determination, leadership and teamwork are tested to the full. You will navigate across the Brecon Beacons in all weathers, scramble over Army assault courses and take part in many challenging outdoor activities including rock-climbing, canoeing, caving and paintballing. You will also learn about the roles, responsibilities and career opportunities in the various Public Services – with visits to the Police, Fire and Military and through visiting speakers. You will learn about how issues including law, diversity and international affairs affect the Public Services. You will be expected to work hard during this course and be prepared to work independently in your own time. Some of the tutors on the course come from the Public Services. These tutors are always willing to provide career advice and practical help to aid you in gaining entry into the Public Service of your choice. Where will it take me? This last year has seen successful Public Services learners join the RAF Regiment, The Royal Welsh Regiment, Thames Valley Police, South Wales Police and the Probation Service. 25% of last year’s National Diploma learners are now at university studying for degrees in criminology and law, international studies and police studies. 25% are working in the Social Services and retail. Owain Hall, 19, Cardiff BTEC National Diploma Public Services “The course has been an excellent experience. I have learnt a great deal and developed my knowledge and skills in a whole range of areas. I have now progressed and am in my second year at university in Aberystwyth studying Politics. I then plan to go for the career I’ve always wanted as an Officer in the Army”.
