Why not gain engineering skills and open up a world of career opportunities?

Engineering technology courses develop your general engineering skills that can lead you into a broad range of careers.

The popular BTEC Award and Certificate programmes cover a range of engineering disciplines including electrical, mechanical, maintenance and design engineering. They develop all round engineering skills and allow you to specialise in the area of engineering you prefer. These qualifications can lead you into apprenticeships or onto university, or progress your career if already working in an engineering role.

The other popular courses ‘Pre-Apprenticeship’ and ‘Engineering Apprenticeship’ courses again develop your general engineering skills. Both courses have a strong practical focus and develop skills and experience undertaking a wide range of engineering work.

Where can it take me?
Last year, 50% of the learners on the BTEC National Certificate course in Engineering with Design secured university places. A further 25% secured apprenticeships during the course.

Daniel Hillier, 20, Cardiff
BTEC National Certificate in Operations and Maintenance
“I didn’t achieve great GCSEs but wanted to continue my education.  After studying a foundation Engineering course I then progressed onto the BTEC National Certificate, which I passed with a double distinction.  I never thought I would be able to go to university but after the hard work I put in at College I am now studying a degree Product Design at Swansea University.   I really enjoyed College – the teachers were great and my time there built my confidence and self believe.”

Jonathan Thomas, 44, Barry
Engineering Apprentices course
“I returned to Barry College to start the ‘Engineering Apprentices’ course and at the same time was spending a lot of time working away from home.  It was hard at times – especially travelling to and from Scotland monthly.  The excellent training facilities at the College and the quality of the training I received has made me feel that I am able to handle anything that comes my way in this career.”
