Would you like to become a qualified carpenter?
Barry College construction courses are recognised as some of the best in the country. Carpentry courses are taught at two of our sites, Barry College Colcot Road in Barry and Barry College Cardiff Construction Training Centre (CCTC) in Cardiff Bay. The site you study at depends on where you live and what course you wish to take. There are two ways to train for a career in carpentry. The first way is to find a job in carpentry and come to College whilst working and gain NVQ qualifications. If you choose this route you will either come to College one day a week, or apply for a unique CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) apprenticeship. Alternatively, if you are not employed in the industry you can study a full-time course at College. On a full-time course you can gain a qualification in under 2 years that gives you the skills to progress into work as a carpentry tradesperson. Once in work, you can then gain the vital industry experience to convert your qualification into a NVQ – the requirement to become a fully qualified and registered carpentry tradesperson. We also offer popular introduction courses in woodwork and carpentry. These are useful if you are considering a career in carpentry and want to learn more about it or if you want to learn these skills for your own enjoyment or DIY. ConstConstruction Saturday Clubs We run popular Saturday Clubs for school pupils in Years 9,10 and 11 who want to find out more about learning and working in construction. These hands-on programmes are FREE OF CHARGE and a great way of finding out if you would like to do a course in brickwork, carpentry or painting and decorating after your GCSEs.

In South Wales large scale building projects such as St David’s 2 Shopping Centre, the International Sports Village and the Defence Training Academy require hundreds of local carpentry professionals over the next decade.
Most construction students secure a job in their chosen trade by the end of their course, with over 50% gaining apprenticeship employment during their course. Brett Burnell, 28, Barry Intermediate Construction Award Carpentry “College has been a great experience and the lecturers have been really friendly. I benefited from their knowledge and experience as they had all previously worked in the carpentry trade. My young son was able to attend the Barry College Childcare Centre whilst I was in College, which was a great help to our family. I’m now a fully qualified and registered carpenter.” Lloyd Smith, Barry NVQ Carpentry “I did a carpentry apprenticeship, working as a trainee carpenter and coming to College 1 day per week to get my qualifications. I had great support from the tutors, especially as I took a year out to play cricket in Austrailia, in the middle of my course. I really enjoyed coming to College and am now a fully qualified and carpenter”.
