Do you want to achieve a GCSE?
Are you thinking of taking A Levels?

GCSE (Level 2)
Many people take a GCSE with Barry College each year. Often a GCSE in a certain subject is a requirement to progress onto a certain career, for example teachers need English and Maths GCSE.

At Barry College we offer part-time GCSEs in:
• Art & Design
• Human Health and Physiology
• Chemistry
• English
• Maths

These are taught over 1 or 2 years.

A Levels (Level 3)
A Level qualifications are usually taught over 2 years. The first year of an A Level is called an AS Level. If you pass the AS Level, you can choose to progress onto the second year to study the full A Level qualification.

Very little has changed with A Levels over the years. All the AS option means is that after a year of study, you gain a recognised qualification.

To progress to university to study a degree, you will usually need at least 2 full A Level qualifications. However, on top of 2 A Levels, you can use AS qualifications to boost your ‘points’ score for UCAS applications, to go to university.

We offer AS and A Levels in the following subjects:
• Art & Design
• Biology
• Chemistry
• Law
• Mathematics

Need to resit GCSE Maths or English?
If you have just missed out on gaining a C or above in school in the last year, we offer resit classes. This is FREE to all full-time students at Barry College or any local school. All you pay is the exam fee.

Where can it take me?
Many learners who study A Levels progress to university.  The College supports all these learners – organising talks from visiting universities, arranging visits to HE fairs and providing UCAS application workshops.

Michelle Jenkins, 26, Barry
A Level Art and Design
“I left school 10 years ago, just scraping through with my GCSEs.  Whilst being at College I have worked in the evenings at Roath Community Centre teaching children jewellery making.  I was finding it hard to stay on top of my College work and even questioned whether to continue with College, but I had great support from my lecturers and I’m so glad I did stay – I now have my first A Level and am due to start the second year of my BTEC National Diploma in Design Crafts course in September.”
Sarah Finch, 33, Sully
A Level Psychology
“I decided to come to study A Level Psychology to gain the skills and qualifications to progress to university to gain my dream career. I have two young children, one who attended the College Childcare Centre whilst I studied. The tutors and the College were incredibly supportive and this year I am starting a degree in Speech & Language Therapy at UWIC”.
